SACRED RIVER SACRED SPRING

SACRED RIVER SACRED SPRING
I have never been to a man made grotto or any of the well known ones however there is a particular spring head in the Itchetuknee River which is a crystal clear turquoise blue spring fed riverĀ and this one in particular, known as the Blue Hole, is a grotto for sure. I have had the same feeling diving into other spring heads in the many springs and rivers of this kind in Florida but the Blue Hole to me is like diving into the Yoni of Oshun.
Thousands of gallons of pristine water pump out daily from this sacred spring so diving in past the intense thrust of the water takes some doing, good swim fins and strong legs and lungs. I have to surface dive down some 15-20 feet to get there.
As I approach I am mesmerized by the undulating white sands and the breathtaking shafts of light from the blazing sun that show me the way down. On particularly sunny days you can see rainbows gracing the white sands at the mouth of the spring head.
The Head Spring at this same river is much easier to get into and the whole area around is like a grotto but the Blue Hole requires a walk through the woods which actually heightens the ritualistic experience of diving into he sacred center. Here it is quiet and serene, away from most of the bustle of tubers and swimmers going down the main part of the river.
My first encounter with the Blue Hole was in 1974 and greatly influenced my move to North Central Florida from the wilds of the Lower East Side of Manhatten,NYC! The effect of this trip was also heightened by the ingesting of magic mushrooms, part of the local river initiation of the day. The colors of deep indigo and turqoise were awe inspiring as I swam against the current up and around the edges til I reached Her watery Yoni.
Back in the day before this space was cordoned off to protect it from canoes and tubers, you could swim up into the spring if you worked very hard and stayed near the edge so as not to engage the intense thrust of the current down the center of the river.
Hundreds of playful colored fish swim amongst the eel grasses and nibble gently on your legs if you stay in one place too long.Needless to say, I find this river and particularly the Blue Hole totally enchanting and have done many rituals here.
My double Piscean being reverts to my mermaid self or perhaps I am a dolphin swimming faster than I can walk darting in and out of caverns and grasses playing with the fish and hunting for the shiny black fossils of ancient giant tortoise, mastodon, sloth, miniature horse and manatee.
She speaks to me here loud and clear as she once did when I sat like Delphyne and the Pythian Priestesses of old chewing the Bay Laurel and speaking the Truth.
When a cement company threatened to build near this pristine sacred river, many revolted and demonstrated in every way possible. I wrote the song “River Goddess” which appears on my Phases of the Silvermoon CD [you can hear or download this song from my website] www.flashsilvermoon.com .The song is dedicated to the River Goddess Herself Oshun and Her sacred river, the Itchetuknee River.may she always run free and clear.
Ye Ye Ye Ye O Oshun Oshun Ye Ye Mio
Blessings Flash

  • I’m from Fort White and grew up on the river, although I’m not a diver I find it to be completely magical.
