The Politics of Spirituality
Some people think that these two concepts at best are unrelated and at worst are like Siamese twins in an unholy embrace that had best be separated before their collusion can do some serious damage.
I suggest that there is a very deep relationship between one’s spirituality which ideally upholds the Golden Rule, and how these rules manifest in the secular world.
I hear the term, “Good Christians” and I do know that they exist and make some fine efforts towards peace and helping the needy. That being said, when I saw Christian missionaries using the devastation in Haiti as an excuse to demand conversion for food and most recently in Uganda calling for the death and demise of gays, I think that Jesus himself would be inclined to come down and give these purveyors of hatred a solid thrashing.
I sat in horror as I watched this brave Ugandan lesbian risked murder, imprisonment and torture as she bravely spoke to the news media about her plight. She cried that American Evangelical Missionaries were making her hard life more horrible. I had to put down these words to express my pain and outrage for the young sister.
What we believe matters and it does create our reality. If we believe in a spiritual hierarchy that externalizes the Divine and that Divinity is represented as other than so many of us, it is a simple matter to oppress, murder, and totally dis empower all those have nots that do not fit the image of what is Divine.
Every nasty ISM that undermines the well being of most of our population is created by these Patriarchal misguided beliefs. No war is ever as damaging and fraught with acts of terror like a war that is waged for GOD and it doesn’t matter which God. Religious extremism can come from many quarters and as long as they feel that they are the Chosen Ones, every one else is in trouble.
A Spirituality that is morally based in the concept of an all loving Mother who loves all of her children rather than just some, sets the tone for a more peaceful, loving way of life. If you are a woman, a person of color etc. your deity should either look like you or in some way include you.
If all of us knew deep in our souls from day one that we were children of the Goddess or God no one could pass laws to put us on the back of any bus.
No one could say that we could not love, marry, adopt children or be deprived of anything that the rest of the world enjoys. The externalization of a Deity will always bring about the worst. Owning our own Divinity will not only keep us safe but it will create a better world.
It is high time that all the spiritual leaders of the various religions ban hate and all agree to follow the Golden Rule that is the alleged foundation of all religions.Excommunicate the extremists who would preach otherwise and let them fight amongst themselves.
Myself, I prefer Spirituality that is open ended to any Religion that keeps one in a box and that’s why we have different churches, synagogues, and temples and if we intend to have democracy on earth, we need a spiritual democracy in “Heaven”.
